How to Modernize Your Platform Without Replacing the Systems You Rely On

The pressure to modernize is real, and the industry is responding. As one example, 74% of organizations have placed “important” or “high” priority on making investments in tech operations for this year, according to a WealthManagement.com survey

But the progress – as Richard Garman, Founding Partner at FTV Capital, put it – is largely cosmetic. Across online brokerages, investment platforms and wealth firms, the dominant upgrade strategy has been an attempt at a front-end refresh. Yet the infrastructure beneath it has largely stayed untouched, and that creates a specific kind of friction – felt on both ends of the platform.

At the Communify Intelligence Experience, Garman spoke directly to why this friction persists – and what it takes to move beyond it.

Garman has spent years working across financial institutions at different stages of digital transition. His read on the current state of the market is clear.

  • The core problem is structural – and firms need an integrated Knowledge Base.

Garman mentioned that most large institutions spend six to eight years building their current stack, hard-coded from front to back. That rigidity makes dynamic change extremely difficult. As he described it, the connected tissue is still old – regardless of how the interface presents. Communify's Component Tech library is built for exactly this constraint: modular, intelligent components that plug into an existing platform, powered by MIND™ AI by default, without rebuilding the entire stack.

  • Trapped Data is the real constraint – it prevents insight.

Garman’s diagnosis centers on data: as long as it stays locked inside legacy architecture, there is no viable path to a modern user experience. The challenge is not accessing the data in principle; it is extracting that data in a format that can power modern tooling. This is the structural problem that most front-end refreshes often sidestep.

  • In-house development has taken firms as far as it can.

Many firms that have relied most heavily on internal teams to build and maintain their platforms are now feeling that constraint most acutely. The output of that model is exactly what most of the market is sitting on today. In Garman's view, firms that continue on that path will continue to produce the same result. The alternative, as he sees it, is to  outsource the experience to partners built for it – while keeping existing systems of record exactly where they are.

  • AI adoption requires a unified data foundation to work.

When financial firms move from AI experimentation toward strategic deployment, AI tools are only as useful as the data they draw on. Without resolving the underlying architecture, AI capabilities sit on the same unstable base. That foundation starts with unifying fragmented custody and accounting data – the barrier Communify addressed directly through its acquisition of Empaxis Data Management. With that foundation in place, Communify's MIND™ AI and Proof of Dimension (P.O.D.™) Framework are built to operate within exactly that layer, giving firms a structured path from experimentation to measurable outcomes.

Communify operates in the data layer that sits between a firm's existing systems of record and its client-facing experience – the layer where modernization happens. MIND™ AI and the Proof of Dimension (P.O.D.™) Framework – Delivers AI-driven insight with built-in precision and traceability. Firms can trust the output and act on it at scale – without manual validation at every step.

This integrated Knowledge Base and intelligence layer enables firms to leverage state of the art intelligence tools for growth, retention and operational efficiency

  • ClientScore™ – Provides needs-based segmentation across a firm's user base, so firms can identify which investors to prioritize, where wallet share opportunity exists, and where churn risk is building – all from a single, structured data view.

  • Intelligent Dialogues™ – Makes personalized communication repeatable and scalable across an organization's entire user base, without adding manual effort for the teams delivering it.

  • Signals and Stories – Turn structured data into specific, actionable next steps. Teams know exactly who to engage, when, and with what – not a general direction, but a decision.

The challenge Garman identifies is an architectural decision that most firms have been deferring. Garman's answer is practical: outsource the experience to the right partners, and in most cases, existing systems of record can stay in place.

Finding the right partner for that layer is where the decision becomes concrete – and it is the role Communify is built for. The data layer, the AI capability, and the modular components to deliver it – Communifybrings all three together in one place.
